Wilson R. Ruiz
Born September 4, 1942 in Quito, passed away on November 15, 2019 age 77 in Toronto. Wilson is survived by his siblings and their families, his children Simon (Heather Maxted), Rafico (Paulina Mickiewicz) and Aly (Michael Tsourounis), their mother, Janice McAuley, and his grandchildren, Rosalind Ruiz, Anabel and Lola Ruiz, and Henry, Isabel and Teddy Tsourounis.
Wilson was a lifelong documentarian who was committed to his craft. A curious mind who lived life through his films, he showed those around him what it takes to be independent and to pursue one’s passions. He will be missed and remembered for being Papa, hermano, tio and more, by his family and friends.

No se realmente como expresar nuestras más sentidas condolencias por la lamentable partida de Wilson, solo quien ha sufrido el dolor de la muerte de un ser querido sabe que no existen palabras que sirvan para dar consuelo.
En todo caso nuestra intensión es manifestarles que sentimos Fausto, Andrea y yo mucho la ausencia de Wilson y que en estos dos años que convivimos disfrutamos de gratos momentos como cada almuerzo de domingo en la casa de Doña Susi y otros muchos que quedarán gravados en nuestro corazón.
Sólo me resta expresarles nuestro apoyo incondicional para superar esta dura etapa y pedir a Dios nuestro señor que el Alma de Wilson descanse en paz.

Janice , Simon, Rafico, Aly, to each of you we send our condolences. This is a complicated time for each of you, befitting a complicated relationship with your dad and ex-husband. Wilson was, in our experience, an enthusiastic man, full of energy and interest in all that was going on around him and, more importantly, in each of his kids. You were each more sympathetic than he might have expected, but admirable in accepting him as he was. He was an excellent journalist, an engaged documentarian and a fantastic basketball court maker (well, maybe not so much). This is a sad time and we’re thinking of you all.

I had the opportunity to meet Wilson in 1989 as the producer of a film on the Drug Wars – Out of Control ( Stornoway Productions -CTV). Wilson was based at the time in Lima and was our connection to the most wonderous adventures we possibily could dream up as film makers. Hanging out with Mario Vargas Llosa as he ran for president, touring the back street barrios of Lima covering the coca paste trade ( that was tearing its users apart ) hanging out with the Peruvian Army that was fighting the Shining Path on the Amazon side of the Andes ( who cared as we went on patrol through acres of coca plants ) and of then flying into a DEA base that like a set from Apocalypse Now ( Hueys and all ). It was totally absurd, somewhat dangerous and it was all orchestrated by Wilson with a large dose of ironic detachment. The broadcaster expected us to be making an anti-drug Just Say No film. It turned out to be so much more and in the end if it rose above the simplistic message we were sent to film it was in a large part due to Wilson’s insights as we developed and then filmed our story. Wilson was one of those larger than life characters that pass through your life however briefly but leave a truly outstanding impression. I was lucky to have known him. My condolences to his family.
