Olivia Matchuk

It is with great sadness in our hearts that Olivia Matchuk, known as ‘Ollie’, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, September 4th, 2020, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Ontario.
Born January 28, 1943 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, to Steve and Mary Macuick, Ollie was the youngest of eleven children. She lived in Regina until her early twenties then, with a zest for life and sense of adventure, she chose and moved to Toronto and remained there until her passing. She held many different jobs while she discovered her new surroundings and retired from McLaren McCann Advertising after long-term employment. Ollie made many good friendships over the years, she knew so many people, and her outgoing nature made it impossible not to love her! Always wanting to have fun, she enjoyed going out on the weekends to the clubs and/ or concerts, one of her favourite spots was ‘Grossmans Tavern’. Those who came to visit her were lucky to have been taken there on Saturday afternoon for their weekly Dixieland’ gigs, then having dinner in Chinatown. Definitely a style icon, she always had a flair for fashion, and really rocked every outfit she wore, including her collection of many hats!
Predeceased by her parents, Steve and Mary, brothers Peter and John, sisters Elsie, Anne, Katherine, Martha, she leaves to mourn brothers Andrew and Matt (Victoria), sisters Jane (SK) and Lena (AB). She leaves to mourn very special nieces and nephews, Gail (BC), Cheryl, Brenda, Steve, Lorrie, (SK), Wendy (AB), Brent, Bonita (SK), Kelvin (BC), Livia (SK), Kenneth (CA-US), Patricia (OR-US), Connie, (AB), Lillian, Barney, Sandra, Darrel, Harve (SK), Marion (AB), Lovern, Barry, Daniel, Gordon (SK), Clifford (AB), and numerous great nieces and nephews. Long-time friends and their families: Vivienne, Elois, Cynthia, Nancy, Fern, Ches, Dalis, Heidi and Warner, Jeff, Helen, Hank, Steve, Sandy and Carlos, Mike, Tony and Jane, Doug (ON), John B (BC), Marie and John (Ireland), JoAnne (US, Bermuda), June (Bermuda), Saroo (Trinidad), Maureen (England), other numerous Raglan Avenue neighbours, friends.
There was no service at Ollie’s request; cremation with burial to follow in Saskatchewan at a later date. Those who passed before you are with you now. ’Toodles’ Ollie: you will be missed.

Ollie was a great person. Always hospitable and a great hostess. She loved live bands and I met up with Ollie and friends many times at Ontario place, Grossman’s and even at the El Macombo a couple of times. Ollie would have a few favourite outfits but made them look expensive and hip. Even though a very busy sociable person Ollie still took the time to baby sit my son when he was young. Ollie you are a very classy lady and will be missed very much! Xoxo

I will always remember celebrating Thanksgiving Dinner at her apartment with my family and her friends in Toronto. She always welcomed us with open arms and delicious food. I will always remember her advice to protect myself which always gave us a laugh (inside joke). You will be greatly missed. Much love

I will miss my friend, Olivia—“Ollie”, “Oliver”. We had so many good times together; grooving to the blues and all the latest
music. Yes, she was a cool dancer; …can just envision her doing just that now..
Ollie came to Bermuda when she thought she should—-when I was in my late term of pregnancy and when my husband, Mel, died. And, she caught the bouquet thrown when I got married. So, she was a big part of me and my family’s life for a long time and I WILL MISS HER. I WILL NEVER FORGET HER, AND…I will “catch up” with her ” bye and bye.”
She did it her way. Sincere condolences to her family and Thank You for letting us have her for all these years.

My deepest condolences to Ollie’s family and friends. She was charismatic, opinionated and the coolest gal on the our street! I cared about her wellbeing even when she didn’t want me to and I think about her every day. She was her own person. My family and I will always remember her.

Dear Ollie,
I can’t believe you are gone. It only seemed like yesterday we were doing Carabana breakfast, making your famous rum punch. Or spending time at Alberts Hall seeing so many great blues artists including Etta James. Pre Christmas pierogi making, where we all learned how to “pinch” properly. Seeing the Stones at the ACC. Saturday morning breakfasts and garage sales. You were famous for your hats, your heels, and that thing you did with your lips when you looked at yourself in the mirror. Then there was the time we made the famous carrot cake. So many good memories to cherish. Thank you my Ollie for so many wonderful memories. You will be missed. Love you. Fern

Ollie,
While I hadn’t seen you in years I always felt connected when seeing your FB posts/comments. I have such fond memories of working with you at MacLaren and loved hearing about your weekend escapades whether it be cooking, what group you heard at Grossmans, family, holiday get-togethers, movies, or some new music you discovered. You were always fun to talk to and have a few laughs. Not to mention your famous hats you wore to the Christmas parties. You were one in a million and I am so happy our paths crossed. You were one cool lady. My condolences to all your family. Rest in peace my friend.

Ollie and my Mother, Barb Dufty (who passed 4 years ago) worked together and were best friends for many years. I realized last night that her facebook presence had been nil for a few months and her page had been taken down. I called her today and her phone was disconnected so I knew something was wrong. Luckily, after a short search, I found this site and now know what happened. RIP Ollie and I’m sure you and Mom are yucking it up bigtime and being entertained by Jeff Healey in Heaven.

Dearest Ollie
We first met each other working at Dominion stores in 1966. From the very beginning there was never a dull moment. So many laughs and chuckles
You came to my family for over 50 years for Christmas dinner. Sneaking out afterwards to smoke a doobie.
You had a big heart and never said a bad word about anyone.
Always ready for an adventure.
I’ll miss you. You were such a unique personality.
