John Wells (1928-2017)

John Wells died at age 89 in his home on July 24, 2017. He is survived by his wife Sybil of 64 years, his three children, David, Peter and Heather, and his two grand children Patrick & Elena.
John was born in London, UK, coming to Canada on a scholarship to study architecture at the University of Toronto. There he met his lifelong wife Sybil living in the campus co-op.
After graduating in 1953, and a brief association with Harry Burston, John began his architectural partnership with Elmar Tampold. Each provided complementary skills in a successful and productive practice. The firm is responsible for numerous public, institutional and private projects, but is perhaps best known for its work with student residences (set up as suites to promote social interaction vs. dorm rooms) and The Colonnade on Bloor St W in Toronto – one of the city’s earliest mixed-use buildings combining retail, office and residential (with architect Gerald Robinson).
John had a diverse range of interests including wind generation, underground houses and forestry both in Canada and Central America. He loved his Southern Ontario island cottage. He was a gentleman in business, and a kind and generous man to his family.
Special thanks to the healthcare team at Sunnybrook Hospital, The Temmy Latner Centre and Living Assistance Services.

Sybil and family, we are so sorry to hear the news of John’s passing. We would see him in the garden or putting out the garbage or walking the dog over our 30 years on Glengowan. He was the consummate gentleman and will be missed.
Heather Wells
It keeps coming up … John was a “gentleman”. Thank you for saying so. The words are sweet to our ears. John loved his home and enjoyed the time he spent looking after it. Thank you again.
Heather Wells (Daughter).

If I recall correctly John came after graduation to Shore & Moffat Architects where we were colleagues and friends. I recall his careful work there and followed his interesting projects after he left and formed Tampold & Wells. My condolences in the loss of
a very fine architect and family leader.
Heather Wells
It is very kind of you to share your memories and kind words. They bring a smile to our faces as we remember John with aching hearts. Thank you. Heather Wells (Daughter)

Heather, I was doing architectural research and came across the firm Tampold & Wells. That’s when I came across your father’s obituary.
My sincere condolences to you, your mother and to the rest of your family.

I have been thinking about your family lately and stared looking up names. I saw sybil and john some years back when i popped in to see the garden. When i was first sarting my landscape company john gave me the opportunity to help build that garden on the ravine afer having maintained his office plants for a few years. He was always so kind and thoughtful when I would come to him for advise. My heart goes out to all the family.
